Typical Assignments
At Source Computers, we get an opportunity to help our clients in many different ways. Because we do so much more than just sell and install hardware, a good way to get a feel for our capabilities is to look at some of the assignments we have completed for our customers:
Migration
Perhaps one of the most difficult tasks a customer can undertake is to migrate to a new system. We have helped dozens of clients upgrade to new UNIX servers or to migrate from old UNIX machines to new PC servers running Caldera. We know how to do the data conversion, configuration, etc., necessary to make your migration a success. And, by taking advantage of the performance and economies of scale of PC servers, we can deliver superior performance for often less than 25% of the cost of a traditional mini-computer.
Disaster Recovery
A business person's worst nightmare is a failed computer system that cannot be restored. We got involved in such a situation after a company's previous consultant, the hardware vendor, the software vendor and in-house staff were all unable to repair a lightning damaged disk. The customer found that, due to poor operational procedures, that their backups were useless. We were able to get their data off of the damaged disk and onto a new disk.
Performance Tuning
One client was experiencing 30+ second response time on a 3 year old $10k computer. The vendor suggested a replacement machine that was twice as powerful but cost $15k. We suggested a performance review. After carefully checking the machines configuration, we tuned the machines kernel (operating system). The result? Response time dropped to under 3 seconds, 50% more users could be added and the client got to keep their $15k.
Web Hosting
For customers who want a presence on the World Wide Web, but don't want the expense and security concerns of a full time internet connection, we provide web hosting on Apache servers.
Project Reviews
The worst thing you can do in a project is continue to spend money on an unproductive approach. We have been instrumental in helping clients assess the state of their projects, address the issues and problems and help get the project back on track. Often, a few days of our time can prevent weeks or months of unproductive work.
Security
We have performed security reviews for large and small companies, helping them certify that their machines are safe from tampering. Additionally, we have been called in to break into UNIX systems when passwords were lost or when management wanted to test the effectiveness of their security policy. Additionally, we have experience with internet, and firewalls so we can help you ensure your company is safe from outside hacking.
